Quick Facts:

You will park at Robert Moses Field 5, 30 Minute walk with kids, 3/4 Mile to Kismet, Trail stroller friendly

Need to Know Information:

Older kids (6 and above) can do this trek easily walking on their own. If you have younger kids, it is possible with an all-terrain stroller, but it will take some work. Also, there is not much shade along the path on a very hot day so hats and sunscreen are a must! Make sure to pack lots of snacks and water.

The Nitty Gritty Details:

The hike to Fire Island with kids is one of our favorite Long Island family day trips. There’s nothing littles love more than feeling like they are on an adventure and this fun day trip delivers! First, you will begin by parking at Robert Moses, Field 5. Your walk will begin on the boardwalk with lots of flora and fauna surrounding you. In addition, the photo ops and Instagrammable moments abound as you get to the “photo frame” and other signs explaining the vegetation. Beware: There is poison ivy present if you get off the walking trail.

After a few minutes, you will arrive at the lighthouse. It’s the perfect stopping point and you can either go into the gift shop and purchase some locally made art and gifts or just take a breather before the next part of the walk.

As you continue on your way, you will follow the boardwalk (and hopefully see some deer!) until it ends. From here, your walk will be on loose sand. This sand will only accommodate all-terrain stroller tires. After about ten minutes, you will arrive to the enchanting village of Kismet. From here, you can head to the beach for a dip in the ocean (go right) , or you can head towards town (follow any path to the left). You will see the locals with their bicycles and wagons filled with groceries and you will feel like you are in another world!

An alternate route is to walk on the beach the entire way. Both ways are enjoyable; however, if you are traveling with a stroller the walking path is more manageable than the beach.

We recommend lunch at Surf’s Out or the Pizza Shack and a stop by the local playground. The clever design of houses is a treat for the eyes and it’s certainly a lesson for kiddos to realize that there are no cars present on the island!

When you are ready, pack up and prepare for the return hike to Robert Moses. This is really a fun family outing that gives kids a sense of accomplishment when they realize they hiked all the way to Fire Island!
