About Sands Point Preserve

Sands Point Preserve with kids is one of the most unique ways to spend a day on Long Island. Delightful surprises wait around every corner of the expansive grounds and little ones will be excited to take in hiking trails, a REAL castle, and even the beach all in the same day. In fact, this is the thing we love about a visit to Sands Point Preserve with kids- that you have the opportunity to experience all of these landscapes in just one day! Adults will be fascinated by the storied residents and guests that lived on and visited the grounds in a time of opulence and grandeur- there is truly a sense of “The Great Gatsby” on this amazing property. Sands Point Preserve offers a full family day of serious fun, not to mention great photo opportunities!

Dinosaur Trail

This quarter-mile (.25) trail is perfect for your smallest hikers. The kid-friendly, easy-to-complete dinosaur trail features climbing toys and tall trees, then points you right to the playground at the end. Little ones feel incredibly accomplished when they finish the trail, and they can say they went on a real hike!

Woodland Playground

This is easily one of top playgrounds on Long Island. Why? The easy answer is the well -built playground an d the zipline. Kids line up for the adventure of zipping across the sturdy line and they will do it again, and again, and again. However, after the thrill of the zipline, take a look at the details on this playground. This five year old playground offers several climbing areas, and unique aspects that we have not seen on other LI playgrounds. There are unique wood structures, sitting areas, a “little library” and even a nature-inspired spot to read. Plan on spending a significant part of your visit at this playground. Note: Dogs are allowed on the trails at Sands Preserve, but not on the playground.

Phil Dejana Learning Center

Next, head over to the Phil Dejana Learning Center. This area features xylophones that you can really play, structures with unique plants, and a stage where kids can belt out a few notes, this is not to be missed! Classes are offered at different times throughout the year, so it is worth checking out the official website to check for times.

Beach Hike

Here’s where the trip to Sands Point Preserve becomes even more interesting. After exploring the park and playground, it’s time to head to the beach! Take a quick break inside the castle, then follow the signs to the right to get to the beach. The hike passes a pond and gorgeous leafy trees. Don’t be surprised if you come across some current residents like bullfrogs, tadpoles, or Red-Eared turtles! Kids will never suspect that after the short hike you are going to pop out right in front of the beautiful Long Island Sound and be on the beach. On clear days you can see sailboats and amazing views.

Food

Do not plan on purchasing food at Sands Point Preserve. There may be concessions available inside the castle gift shop on some days, but don’t depend on this. Pack a fun picnic to enjoy a full day on the grounds.

Enjoy!

During our journeys around Long Island I constantly run into people who have never visited this unique place and I always encourage them to get there for a visit as soon as they can! Sands Point Preserve is one of our favorite places to spend family time. There are so many things to do and at this unique location. Enjoy!
