Norman Levy Park with Kids
Getting There:
Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, 1600 Merrick Rd., Merrick, NY 11566
Just the Facts:
Norman Levy Park in Merrick is great for an easy day trip. Not only is it my favorite price (free!) but it offers animal watching and a fun day out without being overwhelming for kids. The goats and sheep are a hit with little ones. Watch their reactions to the furry creatures and that will be worth the trip itself. When I was a new mom with three under three, I struggled to find things to do that were manageable and Norman Levy Park perfectly fits the bill.
Animal Life
Norman Levy Park is home to a troop of Nigerian Dwarf Goats and two resident sheep. Their barn and living quarters are delightful to small kids; in addition, the park rangers take them on a walk around the park several times a day to groom the park by eating grasses, bushes, and weeds. Make sure to read the list of their names ranging from Sleepy to Mr. Whistles and see if kiddos can identify who is who. You might get the chance to get up close and personal with one of the creatively named cuties. Also, make sure to look for the chicken coop situated near the parking lot.
Hiking/Walking
Besides goat watching, the main activity at Norman Levy Park is hiking well-kept nature trails. Once you get away from the parking lot, you will feel like you are deep in the forest. Be prepared for possible chipmunk, lizard or rabbit sightings along the trail. Depending on the age/activity level of your littles, you can walk several miles or just take a light stroll, look at animals, and head back to the car.
Trail Specifics:
If you opt for a longer trail walk there are some great options. Head up to the windmill and you will be treated to a pond with ducks and waterfowl, a life-size sundial clock, and a view of the Manhattan Skyline. There are some benches and rest areas once you get there. If the weather has been dry, a stroller with bicycle/trail tires will be able to make it.
Another option is to head to the left with your back facing the parking lot. You’ll pass the dump on your left, then you’ll see the expansive golf course and THEN after about .9 miles you will get to the pier. Once at the pier you’ll be treated to gorgeous South Shore views and on a clear day you can see all the way to Jones Beach.
Note: If walking/hiking isn’t an option for you, you can speak to the rangers and coordinate a golf cart drive to the pier.
Bathroom Situation:
Bathroom Situation: Several years ago, a Merrick Boy Scout troop built a compost toilet/outhouse for the park. It’s great for the environment and really cool to see if you have never seen one. However, the set-up is not friendly for smaller kids, so I would stick to a portable car potty. There is no diaper changing area.
